Jeff Roller is among the sixth generation of potters in the Margaret Tafoya family from Santa Clara Pueblo, New Mexico. Since the age of 9, he has been practicing the ancient craft which he learned from Margaret and his mother Toni Roller. For each piece Jeff digs the clay from Santa Clara, forms the pots with hand coiled clay, polishes with a smooth stone and fires the completed creation in an open wood fire. The fire is smothered with dry horse manure to give the pots their signature black color. Jeff has taken the ancient art form a step further adding his own unique style by including sculpted animal figures on lids and sculpted animal figures protruding from traditional vessels. This sparked an interest in sculpture which led him to explore the bronze medium. He continues to work in both mediums and has been honored with several awards as a potter and bronze artist showing at previous Santa Fe Indian Markets.
