A 1905 November gale on Lake Superior which wrecked more than two dozen ships prompted the U.S. Lighthouse Service to construct the Split Rock Light Station. The station was completed and put into service in 1910 and ceased operation in 1969. Split Rock Lighthouse is a National Historic Landmark.
