Paper White

2022, oil on canvas, 8" x 10"

The boreal forests of northern Minnesota cover more than two million acres, encompass the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and Superior National Forest, and are home to spruce, fir, paper birch, aspen, and jack pines. Betula papyrifera or paper birch, also known as American white birch and canoe birch is a short-lived birch species and is named for the tree's thin white bark, which often peels in paper like layers from the trunk. The paper birch is often one of the first species to appear in a burned area and is an important species for moose.

“As long as autumn lasts, I shall not have hands, canvas and colors enough to paint the beautiful things I see.” – Vincent Van Gogh
