‘I‘iwi

Hawaii’s most well-known honeycreeper is adapted to feed on the long, curved Hawaiian Lobelia blossom (shown), but scarcity of the flower has many ‘I‘iwi switching to the ‘Ohi‘a blossom. ‘I‘iwi are threatened on several islands but still thrive on the Big Island at higher elevations.

Original painting by Mark Martel, watercolor and gouache
