Remembered Glory

I came across this impossibly ornate capital on a pink granite column, one summer afternoon in Neosho, Missouri. It was a reminder of the out-sized aspirations of so many small Midwestern towns at the turn of the last century, echoing down to the present with glorious architectural details, still evident on the often empty buildings of quiet town squares.
